- 요약Throughout an expansive body of work composed between 1935 and 1978, Muriel Rukeyser urges readers to overcome their "fear of poetry," so that we might "stop fascism as it begins, taproot by taproot in our daily lives, and never need to go to war with each other." Muriel Rukeyser: The Fear of Poetry takes a closer look at the nature of this fear, locating the "fear of poetry" not in the reader, but across the many texts the poet left behind. I examine the compositional histories of three groups of texts that ascribe social, political, and therapeutic value to reading poetry: the poem "Mediterranean" and prose accounts of the Spanish Civil War; the biography Willard Gibbs: American Genius, the poetic series "Lives," and "The Usable Truth" lectures; and Houdini: A Musical, a career-spanning project whose many drafts include a poem, ballet, play, and musical comedy. In each project, Rukeyser attempts to renew her faith in poetry's social and political possibilities at different junctures in the twentieth century: first, on the brink of revolution; second, after that revolution's failure; finally, when freedom exists only for the individual. I focus on key moments of instability in her thought: moments when she will not articulate what poetry is or what it is for; when she pushes at the limits of the work poems can do in the world; when she longs for poems and poets to do and be more. Each chapter reveals an aspiration to be something other than a poet: a soldier swaying the course of history; a scientist shaping the technologies of the future; an escape artist modeling freedom before mass audiences. I show how her work confronts, avoids, and tries to overcome the possibility that poetry will fail to achieve real-world ends. I argue that Rukeyser opens up new ways of thinking about the desires, both possible and impossible, we bring to the act of reading a poem.
