- 요약This doctoral thesis contains three article-length treatises dealing with the structure citizens' political attitudes, measurement practice thereof, and the impact of (counter-)ideological signals on information processing. The first article comparatively investigates the structure of mass believe systems based on political issue statements contained across ten waves of the European Social Surveys (ESS). A series of causal mediation model leveraging macro- and micro-level information extracted from 231 belief system networks suggest that political systems with more robust legacies of ideologically consistent and predicable elite competition as well as politically engaged civil societies harbor more coherent mass attitude systems. The second paper delves into the topic of ideological dimensionality from a meta-theoretical perspective, showing how current measurement practice in political science likely often leads to ambiguity in empirical estimates involving special representations of citizens' political preferences. Unlike other constructs frequently measured by political psychologists, optimal latent dimensionality in the ideological appears to grow without bound as researchers supply additional information on citizens political preferences. In response, a Bayesian hierarchical factor model is proposed that is better equipped at handling an arbitrary number of positively correlated latent ideological factors found in political attitude space. The final paper provides novel insight into voters' appraisal of ideologically counter-stereotypical messages as an uncommon but recurrent phenomenon in political communication. The results of a fully randomized vignette experiment show that although recipients of rank-breaking messages show significantly lower levels of affect for co-partisan senders of rank-breaking leaders, they move ideologically closer to the thus endorsed position.
