초록/해제
요약 In this study, I explored Arab female parents' perspectives and intentions toward their children's heritage language (HL) maintenance in the United States. Four primary research questions were addressed: (1) what are the parental perspectives and intentions regarding their children's HL in the United States? (2) how do religion, identity, and investment impact the parents' HL maintenance perspectives and practices? (3) what challenges do Arab parents encounter in relation to their children's HL? and (4) what strategies do parents employ to maintain their children's HL?This qualitative ethnographic case study utilized semi-structured interviews, focus group, participant observations, and document collection. Thematic analysis was employed to study data collected from ten female participants, four as primary participants and six in the focus group, representing diverse Arabic countries, educational backgrounds, economic status, different previous experiences, and intentions regarding staying in the United States.Drawing on the interrelated three-way conceptual framework and construct of religion, identity, and investment, this tripartite framework was used to shed light on the unstable Arabic heritage language maintenance/shift state among the Arab parents. Drawing from the identified themes, the study revealed that parents place significant importance on preserving their heritage language. However, they recognize the critical role of the dominant language for their children. As a result, this dynamic introduces elements of competition and prioritization. The study identified factors that impacted parents' perspectives regarding HL maintenance and categorized them into internal minor, internal major, and external factors. The study underscores the changeable nature of parents' beliefs, influenced by their plans and intentions, impacting their perspectives regarding HL maintenance and dominant language acquisition. Furthermore, the findings indicated that religious beliefs and identity were among the key determinants of preserving heritage language. While this study sheds light on Arab female parents' perspectives, several counter-limitations warrant consideration and suggest avenues for future research. Exploring perspectives from regions where Arabic is not the sole language of communication and considering the contributions of fathers in fostering HL learning are crucial. Additionally, studying Arab parents in diverse societal contexts will enrich understanding of HL maintenance attitudes and practices.
