초록/해제
요약Supernovae (SN) play a key role in processing matter and energy in the galaxy, affecting both the galaxy itself and the surrounding environment. These large-scale mechanisms are informed by the understanding of small-scale processes such as the interaction of SN ejecta with shock fronts in the interstellar medium (ISM). The state of the environment under which this interaction occurs, probed by far ultraviolet (FUV) emission, determines how the mass distribution of dust changes across shock fronts. However, such emission is difficult to observe. What observations exist were taken across spatial scales too large to resolve the delicate shock filaments, blending different populations of particles in the shock fronts together. This dissertation will report on new observations made by the Integral Field Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Experiment (INFUSE) sounding rocket experiment to expand the observational basis of one particular shock front across wavelengths that have not previously been simultaneously measured. This payload observed the XA Region of the Cygnus Loop supernova remnant, a well observed population of shock fronts where a dense finger of ISM material is interacting with the SN ejecta. C IV λλ 1547, 1551 A emission was detected and a model of dust grain depletion based on Hα λ 6562.8 A data fits the observation. Other spectral lines yield a measurement of shock velocities present in the shock fronts; however, they are too low to be consistent with the detected O VI λλ 1032, 1037 A emission. This is likely due to a variety of shock velocities being present in one INFUSE spatial resolution element. The use of archival data to calculate shock velocities and uncertainties in accounting for resonance scattering likely contributed to this result.
