- 요약Many modern workers relate to their work as a calling. A calling, broadly understood, is a fulfilling vocation, offering personal significance, moral importance, and social impact. Qualitative, longitudinal research following the development of callings over time and the evolution of callings in response to challenges faced at work is needed. This three-paper dissertation builds on Weber's theoretical understanding of calling outlined in The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism. Chapter 1 shows how new school principals make sense of working in a high pressure, high turnover field, and describes novice school principals' calling narratives. This study offers a descriptive, qualitative component to research on principals' motivation and transition, focusing on principals' efforts to manage challenges. Understanding principal motivation is important for recruiting and retaining talented educators. Chapter 2 follows the same principals over time. This study reveals that principals narrate either flexible or fixed callings and offers a nuanced understanding of how individual understandings of calling as well as contexts both matter for the ongoing sensemaking involved in maintaining a calling through challenges. Chapter 3 explores the evolution of calling in the precarious setting of stage and screen acting. The experience of rejection and inability to work leads actors to search for new understandings of their calling. Specifically, actors move beyond self-oriented motivations to other-oriented understandings of their calling. The findings suggest that the experience of certain challenges can lead to a search for new meanings and purpose. Together, these studies reveal how notions of calling evolve in the process of navigating challenges and are constantly under construction. They reveal a need for practitioners and organizations to provide supportive environments for the deployment of callings in sustainable ways.
