요약When speakers refer, they often elaborate beyond what is sufficient (e.g., "the yellow car" in a context where "the car" suffices). Across five studies, I tested factors that influence elaboration, how elaboration affects communication, and how speakers reason about referential choices. In Experiment 1, I replicated Yoon et al.'s (2012) perspective-taking study on size-modifiers, probing how mention of an object's relative size within a display is influenced by the speaker's goal (i.e., Requesting vs. Informing), and a competitor object's absence (No Competitor) or availability to both interlocutors (Common Ground), or to the speaker only (Privileged Ground). I replicated an interaction wherein speakers mentioned size more in Requests than Informing for Common Ground competitors, but less likely for those in Privileged Ground. In Experiment 2, I repeated this procedure for color- and pattern-modifiers, finding the same interaction; however, color and pattern were mentioned more in all conditions, elaborated or not. In Experiment 3, I measured the production of subordinate-level labels, which were produced less than color or pattern overall, though they were produced in all conditions, yielding an interaction of goal and perspective. In Experiment 4, I measured response times for locating a referent in a display upon hearing elaborated vs. sufficient descriptions. Results revealed that color mentions improved identification, but not pattern nor type, and elaborating was not overtly helpful. Finally, Experiment 5 featured a language game that probed how speakers reason about costs vs. benefits, revealing that speakers were highly cost-sensitive, though demonstrating a clearer understanding of costs measured on the basis of word count than on informativity. Overall, this project bears important implications for the reference production process, particularly concerning elaboration.
