초록/해제
요약This dissertation introduces a novel computational model of the Homeric formula. The proposed model is based on Hainsworth's idea of "mutual expectancy" and seeks to excavate the mechanism of suggestion that defines formulaic language. This model is presented alongside several philological analyses of patterns both large and small. Foundational descriptive statistics and corresponding datasets for both the text and meter of the Homeric corpus constitute another significant contribution of this project; these elements can be found in Chapters 1 and 3, respectively. The model of formulaic language and sample analyses are in Chapter 2. Chapter 4 presents a long-form philological argument about the role of passage repetitions in Homeric epic. Chapter 5 includes a complete codebook and documentation for each dataset. This dissertation offers new data, new methods, and new models to traditional philological practices.
