- 요약The drumline, a marching unit of drummers in a marching band or drum corps, is primarily tasked with keeping a steady beat and providing the rhythmic drive for the ensemble. In the competitive North American drum corps circuit, Drum Corps International (DCI), the drumline consists of around twenty musicians and executes highly dense and complex rhythms in near-perfect synchrony within an ensemble of 150 musicians. These performers are spread out across a field while performing a demanding musical and visual program, which is astonishing given the high degree of accuracy and coordination of this performance. This dissertation describes this niche drumming practice, constructs a methodology for interpreting these dense percussive textures, and illustrates the many musical and cognitive mechanisms that allow for such a synchronized and accurate rhythmic performance. In addition to music theoretical and cognitive approaches to this idiom, I offer insight into this practice through first-hand accounts by practitioners. More broadly, this dissertation aims to bridge the gap between the knowledge of drumming practitioners and music scholars, and argues that an understanding of drumming practices requires an embodied approach, considering the bodies and movements that make this music.
