초록/해제
요약Death and grief are natural facets of being human, however they are not addressed in most formal schooling contexts in the United States. This dissertation addresses the notable absence of death, mortality, and grief education in curricula in the United States, despite increasing need to address topics of death and grief in the pandemic context of contemporary education. The sparse existing approaches to death education in the U.S. are critiqued for their limited scope, prompting a call for a more comprehensive approach to death and grief in educational settings with specific educational goals in mind. These goals include: normalizing death and grief, helping students learn to grieve, remediating misinformation and promoting agency, promoting social justice, and responding to trauma. Reasonable objections to the inclusion of death education in schools are addressed in this study as well. Overall, the purpose of this dissertation is to advocate for the development of a curriculum and philosophy of death education that prioritizes historically marginalized and underrepresented experiences and includes nonliteral human deaths in the curriculum.
