- 요약Between Pessimism and Optimism: On Performative Attitudes in Contemporary Black Studies analyzes the works and concepts of what appear to be two modes of thought in Black Studies to consider their ways of co-emergence, degrees of in differentiation, and points of shared divergence, even from what they take themselves to be. How and why have Black Optimism and Afropessimism, generated a common but contested intellectual practice, and in what ways has that practice widened the scope and deepened the impact of Black Studies? Central to my investigation is the concept of "performative attitude" in intellectual practice and its capacity for a more supple and subtle analysis of intellectual conflict and antagonism than its reification into schools of thought or academic personae. How does performance as a conceptual analytic deepen our understanding of the current moment in Black Studies and its general impact in the contemporary human sciences? How does Black Study's deployment of "performative attitude" aid in rendering theoretical intellection as an indistinct and collective practice of ante-ontological cohabitation?Through three themes of study pertaining to Blackness - narrative, law, and value - I convene Black Optimism and Afropessimism to investigate their overlapping thematic undertakings for their underlying spooky action. I am interested in the ways their convergent modes of problematization call on diverse analytical frameworks resulting in blurred modes of discursive negotiation that unravel pre-established intellectual fields. What emerges is an impression of Blackness unfolding in less than two distinct ideations, yet more than one unified object. This dynamic, in which Blackness is theorized as both more and less than itself reveals that energetic deindividuation by which Black Study powerfully enhances theoretical practice through rigorous internal multiplying, underground meta-structural blurring, and importantly, the deployment of performative attitude in the practice of studying otherwise. Through post-structuralist and deconstructive analysis, I consider the release of black energy generated in the performative attitude adopted in contemporary Black Studies through the compressed genealogical envelopment necessitated by the ongoing entanglement of Black Optimism and Afropessimism.
