- 요약The goal of my dissertation project is to establish a sequence of comparative, mutually-illuminating readings of Vladimir Nabokov's and Thomas Pynchon's fiction on the basis of their interest in, and paranoia about the hyperreal potential of visual representation-specifically, film, television, advertising, and memory. Hyperreal forms of representation resemble reality, or our idea of it, so closely that they become more real than reality itself. My inquiry is heavily informed by Jean Baudrillard's theorization of hyperreality and is restricted to Pynchon's and Nabokov's early work. This study shows that hyperreality is a perennial concern in the work of both authors and that subjecting its narrative role to further theoretical scrutiny stands to give us a better understanding of the key thematic concerns that drove Pynchon and Nabokov to create art. Both authors are concerned with hyperreality as a tool of political control and as a personal existential blunder. Hence, the texts I single out dramatize the way societal forces deploy mass media to trap us in a totalizing unreality that alienates us from ourselves, and the way we can dissociate ourselves from reality through our memories. Both authors are also interested in political practices that can free us from hyperrealities that are imposed on us by outside forces and by our own sense of nostalgia for realities that no longer exist-or might not have existed to begin with.
