■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  compares  competing  political  ecologies  and  environmental  aesthetics  in  Costa  Rica  during  the  first  half  of  the  twentieth  century.  It  examines  a  range  of  literature,  visual  art,  and  other  cultural  objects  related  to  the  banana  plantations  of  the  United  Fruit  Company  in  Costa  Rica.  The  dissertation  begins  with  the  history  of  the  United  Fruit  Company  and  a  critique  of  the  cultural  consequences  of  the  emergence  of  the  modern  banana  on  Costa  Rica,  the  United  States,  and  modernity  itself.  It  argues  that  the  United  Fruit  Company,  through  the  development  of  the  modern  plantation  system  on  the  Caribbean  coast  of  Costa  Rica,  also  produced  a  particular  way  of  seeing  and  relating  to  nature-an  environmental  aesthetic  and  political  ecology  based  on  the  logic  of  the  plantation.  The  focus  then  shifts  to  the  work  of  Costa  Rican  writers:  Carmen  Lyra,  a  kindergarten  teacher,  feminist  activist,  and  founder  of  the  local  communist  party;  and  Carlos  Luis  Fallas,  a  plantation  worker  and  union  organizer.  The  dissertation  demonstrates  the  crucial  place  of  ecology  in  their  literary  work  as  foundational  texts  of  the  country's  environmental  movement,  as  well  as  within  primary  education  and  organized  labor.  It  argues  that  these  intellectuals  used  literature  to  produce  competing  environmental  aesthetics  and  political  ecologies,  employing  the  concepts  of  creole  garden,  plant-thinking,  communist  subjectivity,  utopia,  and  realism.  The  dissertation  proposes  that  this  form  of  critical,  plant-based,  pedagogical  literature  produced  by  Carmen  Lyra,  Carlos  Luis  Fallas,  and  others  constitutes  a  form  of  revolutionary  political  ecology  and  environmental  aesthetics  that  enables  alternative  forms  of  living  and  thinking  in  an  age  of  apparent  environmental  and  political  catastrophe.
