■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  appears  at  the  intersection  of  Latinx  media  studies  and  digital  media  theory.  It  focuses  on  the  physical  and  material  movement  of  media  and  their  concomitant  experiences  of  relief,  release,  and  catharsis,  what  I  call  rarefactions.The  project  traces  the  infrastructural,  technological,  physical,  embodied,  and  cultural  movement  of  Latinx  cultural  production,  specifically  in  Chicano  soul  music,  superhero  comic  books,  and  digital  video  comedy.  I  propose  a  new  methodological  framework,  brown  physics  of  media,  to  attune  to  the  rarefactions  in  Latinx  media.  Media  studies  has  thoroughly  documented  how  compression,  and  its  technical  processes,  minimize  and  reduce  experiences  for  the  sake  of  efficiency  and  acceleration.  Every  physical  compression  necessitates  and  is  accompanied  by  a  rarefaction,  but  this  phenomenon  has  not  received  such  attention  in  media  theory.  However,  minoritarian  peoples  use  media  as  a  realm  for  rarefactions.  Using  a  brown  physics  of  media  framework,  I  detail  the  ways  that  racialized  peoples  transfer  energy,  create  space,  and  exert  forces  across  a  range  of  creative  practices.  Through  rarefactions,  I  draw  on  the  vocabulary  of  modern  physics  and  translate  it  to  a  new  language  that  attends  to  the  artistic  and  cultural  specificity  of  these  cultural  products.  Each  chapter  analyzes  the  degrees  of  movement  in  the  production  of  Latinx  media  to  develop  a  concept  that  better  describes  how  matter  moves  and  interacts.  The  first  chapter  describes  the  rarefaction  of  onda,  or  vibe,  that  propagates  in  popular  music  using  organs  and  synthesizers  in  Chicano  soul.  In  the  second  chapter,  I  use  superhero  comic  books  to  illustrate  how  image  editing  software  helps  generate  a  spacetime  of  endurance  using  color  through  the  concept  of  horizonte,  or  horizon.  The  final  chapter  formulates  relajo,  or  mess,  as  an  audiovisual  rarefaction  of  embodied  excess  that  is  mediated  with  motion  prediction  algorithms  in  digital  video  comedy.  In  delineating  and  tracking  the  physical,  technical,  and  cultural  motion  of  Latinx  cultural  production,  these  chapters  shift  the  paradigm  for  the  study  of  race  and  media  to  a  place  where  the  objects  of  study  do  more  than  simply  represent.  This  dissertation  contributes  to  the  material  and  physical  turn  in  theories  and  philosophies  of  media.
