초록/해제
요약The early twentieth century gave rise to English late Romantic composers such as Frederick Delius, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Gustav Holst, Frank Bridge, and John Ireland. Within this generation of musical minds was Thomas F. Dunhill (1877-1946), a professor, lecturer, composer, promoter of British music, board examiner, and writer on music. As a composition student of Charles Villiers Stanford at the Royal College of Music, Dunhill was the first student to win the Tagore Gold Medal in 1899. He is especially known for his contributions to chamber music, which include his book, Chamber Music: A Treatise for Students; his compositions for chamber strings and winds; and the Thomas Dunhill Chamber Concerts, a performance series dedicated to the promotion of works by young British composers. In recognition of his contributions to chamber music, Dunhill was the first recipient of the Cobbett Chamber Music Medal in 1924.As a composer, Dunhill embraced nearly all genres throughout his life including works for opera and theatre, educational piano works, chamber music, solo songs, part- songs, folksong arrangements, a symphony, and more. Some of his most celebrated vocal works include the orchestral song cycle, The Wind Among the Reeds, op. 30; the one-act opera The Enchanted Garden, op. 65, which earned a Carnegie Award in 1925; and the comic opera Tantivy Towers, op. 73.Dunhill prolifically published during his life; however, almost all his works have since fallen out of publication. Little scholarship exists on Dunhill's music, and there is not yet a definitive catalogue of his works. Although he published over three hundred compositions and folksong arrangements for choral groups, almost no scholarly attention has been given to these works. Thus, the focus of this DMA document is to survey and catalogue Dunhill's choral output, considering his contributions in the contexts of early twentieth-century British choral music and continued relevance in the choral repertoire.
