초록/해제
요약When student-athletes retire from sport, they develop eating behaviors outside of the athletic environment for the first time. Research has demonstrated that athletes are at-risk for developing disordered eating behaviors given the emphasis on nutrition and body composition in the athletic environment. Specifically, the literature has demonstrated that endurance sport athletes are more at-risk for disordered eating behaviors and body image disturbances given the high caloric burn in the sport. Within the vulnerable population of retired student-athletes, the literature has focused on eating disorder presentation rather than prevention. Retired Division I student-athletes may experience the unintended consequence of a more difficult transition out of sport while losing support (especially nutritional support) from their athletic department. The literature has not examined the experiences of retired female soccer players who must face sociocultural body standards for women, loss of a high caloric burn similar to endurance sports, and loss of athletic department support. Through the theoretical lens of Intuitive Eating, this study uses Consensual Qualitative Research to examine the perceived experiences of retired female soccer players from Power Five, Division I programs (Hill et al., 2005).
