- 요약Critical consciousness (CC) is a developmental competency that can support youth of color in challenging inequity and thriving. Although CC has been associated with a range of positive developmental outcomes for youth of color, less is known about the processes and contexts that can promote CC. The current dissertation leverages multiple methodologies to investigate social justice art and other contexts as sites that can promote CC, and to understand how these contexts are effective in facilitating CC from youth's perspectives. Study 1 takes a quasi-experimental approach to examine social justice art, or the use of art to address social inequities, as a potential site for building CC among youth of color. Study 2 utilizes qualitative inquiry to elevate youth's perspectives on the ways in which arts-based and other contexts across ecological levels contribute to their CC. These findings build novel evidence identifying social justice art programming as a viable context for supporting CC development among youth of color. Further, these findings point to the need for contexts - across youth's home, school, and community settings - to encourage youth's self-expression as a necessary step toward their CC development.
