- 요약Of the estimated 28 million individuals meeting criteria for alcohol use disorder (AUD), less than 3 million received treatment in the last year, suggesting an exceedingly large unmet need for treatment. The current research proposes that an important, but understudied, construct associated with AUD is the drinker self-concept or drinker identity, in which individuals report "I am a drinker" and related traits and attributes. Having a "drinker identity" is associated with more alcohol use and problems, discriminates in severity of AUD among heavy drinkers, and predicts future alcohol use and problems after controlling for current drinking, demonstrating its unique influence on alcohol use and problems above and beyond drinking behaviors themselves. Thus, given these associations, it could be that drinker identity, and continued investigations, could reveal important implications for addressing and treating AUD.However, little empirical attention has been paid to understanding drinker identity and the role it plays in problematic alcohol use and AUD, as well as treatment outcomes. Studies of drinker identity have been hampered by lack of integration and direction to reduce redundancy across research studies, issues of clarity in conceptualization and measurement of drinker identity, and few ecologically valid research studies with real-world alcohol consumption and drinking behaviors. Thus, this project includes three main objectives: 1) To synthesize the existing research in order to better understand the structure, conceptualization, and function of drinker identity; 2) To address measurement and conceptualization concerns by evaluating the current assessments of drinker identity; and 3) To investigate the role of drinking personality traits, as well as overall conceptions of drinker identity, in real-world drinking behavior in drinking contexts.
