- 요약Family caregiving has become increasingly common, with 53 million adults currently providing some form of care to individuals of all ages. It has also become more challenging, in part, because of the aging population and increasing health care and childcare costs. Research on family caregiving has underscored the struggles faced by caregivers, work-family conflicts, and financial strain. However, individuals' navigation of care responsibilities and paid work and their interactions with social insurance programs are underexamined, particularly for a growing subset of caregivers - young-adult caregivers. This dissertation explores and expands our understanding of the consequences of family caregiving, family caregivers' profiles, the economic impact on family caregivers, and the potential and limitations of public assistance programs in supporting them. This dissertation leverages publicly available survey data, the Panel Study of Income Dynamics and Survey of Income and Program Participation, Social Security historical data on income thresholds, and an array of econometric techniques to answer and discover current public policy concerns related to family caregiving.The findings of this dissertation contribute to the literature on caregiving for children and adults by showing that family caregiving during emerging young adulthood is negatively associated with an immediate decline in young adults' emotional well-being and a semi-long-term decline in their working hours. In addition, this dissertation shows that important state-level policies like the Paid Family Leave policy have limited effect on caregiver-households' financial security. Finally, it shows that the current Social Security Disability Insurance program eligibility structure is potentially contributing to sex and racial disparities in access by not considering the impact of young adult milestones, such as becoming a parent, on labor force engagement.
