- 요약Computing, increasingly recognized as an essential literacy, remains inaccessible to many, particularly within marginalized communities. This dissertation explores how human-centered design can address underrepresentation by creating accessible, culturally embedded spaces that broaden participation in computing. As part of this work, I developed scaffolding features within TunePad-a music-coding platform-to support novice learners, lower entry barriers, and foster personal expression through computing. This research introduces the concept of computational enculturation, a process where individuals adopt computational practices as integral to their cultural identity. By embedding computing into community traditions and cultural artifacts, computational practices can be reimagined as inclusive and deeply connected to cultural heritage. At the heart of this vision is The Street Code Movement, an emerging underground computing culture inspired by vernacular street traditions such as hip-hop, skateboarding, and poetry slams. Interventions like Coded Beats, a music-coding program, and the Street Code Jam Fest, a public event showcasing student-coded music, demonstrate how culturally embedded, community-driven spaces foster computational literacy and identity formation. Using iterative Design-Based Research (DBR), I refined these tools and interventions to explore their impact. Findings suggest that culturally integrated environments enhance motivation, identity formation, and retention. Transformative Experience Design (TED) emerged from this research as a powerful approach to address disidentification with computing, offering a holistic design framework to foster a more inclusive, computationally literate society and empower computational identities.
