초록/해제
요약Renowned for his virtuosity and versatility, jazz trombonist Michael Dease has made a significant impact on the jazz world. However, there is a lack of in-depth academic analysis of his artistry. With only a handful of interviews and a solo transcription in DownBeat magazine, a comprehensive exploration of his stylistic contribution to jazz trombone has not been undertaken. This essay seeks to address this deficiency. The study offers a brief biography of Dease and reviews relevant literature. It then provides an in-depth analysis of five transcribed solos, selected for their representation of Dease's improvisational style. Four of these recordings will be jazz standards, and one a standard jazz form, the "Blues." Each solo is examined for melody, harmony, rhythm, stylistic inflection, and techniques. Dease's musical influences are discussed after the analysis. Music examples are cited throughout the analysis, and the appendix features full transcriptions and an interview with Dease.
