- 요약This dissertation explores the political dynamics and societal impacts of territorial loss at the domestic level, with a particular focus on the post-Communist region and Republic of Georgia. Through a combination of historical analysis, survey experiments, and novel methods for the study of both elite and mass narratives, it examines how narratives of territorial loss are constructed, disseminated, and influence political behavior and identity.The dissertation is structured around several key themes. First, it investigates the historical and contemporary narratives surrounding territorial loss, analyzing how they are crafted by political elites and internalized by the populace. The dissertation emphasizes the role of social transmission as opposed to elite manipulation and media in shaping public perception and national identity in the wake of territorial loss.Second, the study employs a mixed-methods approach to assess the impact of territorial loss on political behavior, arguing that salient territorial losses induce a general tendency towards more uncertain forms of political participation. This includes examining electoral volatility, partisanship, and voter behavior in regions affected by territorial disputes. The analysis draws on a range of data sources, including historical Georgian newspapers and contemporary survey data, to trace the evolution of political attitudes and behaviors over time.Third, the dissertation explores the psychological and emotional dimensions of territorial loss. Through a series of experiments conducted in multiple countries and regions, it assesses how individuals' attitudes towards loss and ambiguity influence their political choices and susceptibility to nationalist rhetoric. This includes measuring emotional responses to narratives of loss and examining the interplay between personal and collective memory.The findings reveal that narratives of territorial loss play a significant role in shaping political identity and behavior, often serving as powerful tools for mass mobilization. The dissertation highlights the importance of collective memory in the manifestation of historical legacies, suggesting that the way historical narratives are constructed and disseminated can have profound implications for national cohesion and political stability. These findings offer insights into the mechanisms through which loss is politicized and the long-term effects of territorial disputes on domestic political landscapes, providing a comparative perspective on a literature previously dominated by international relations theory.
