■520    ▼aTeogonia  is  a  symphonic  poem  in  five  sections  based  on  the  mural,  Teogonia  de  los  dioses  chibchas,  by  Luis  Alberto  Acuna.  Each  section  introduces  one  of  the  Chibcha  Gods  and  the  creation  story  of  the  Muisca  people.  Other  references  that  inspired  me  are  symphonic  works  by  Latin-American  composers:  Silvestre  Revueltas,  Alberto  Ginastera,  Jose  Pablo  Moncayo,  and  Arturo  Marquez.  This  work  was  written  in  partial  fulfillment  of  the  requirements  for  the  degree  of  Doctor  of  Music  from  Florida  State  University.  Based  on  the  mural  located  at  the  Hotel  Tequendama  in  Bogota,  Colombia,  Teogonia  is  meant  to  depict  the  creation  story  of  the  Muisca,  or  Chibcha  people.  While  there  are  many  more  characters  in  the  mural,  this  orchestral  work  illustrates  the  five  principal  Gods  of  the  creation  story:  Chiminigagua,  Sue,  Chia,  Chibchacum,  and  Bochica.  The  piece  opens  with  Chiminigagua,  the  all-powerful  God  and  creator  of  the  universe.  This  character  is  represented  by  a  three-note  motive  [D-F-G]  which  is  the  basis  of  the  piece  and  reappears  in  each  of  the  following  sections.  The  piece  begins  in  a  primordial  state  of  the  universe  until  the  spark  of  creation  which  leads  into  the  second  section.Sue  is  the  God  of  the  sun  and  represents  light  and  energy.  This  upbeat  section  is  characterized  by  the  use  of  traditional  Colombian  dance  rhythms,  most  prominently,  the  bambuco.  These  rhythms  can  be  identified  by  the  simultaneous  and  alternating  groupings  of  two  and  three.  The  third  section  depicts  the  moon  Goddess,  Chia.  In  mythology,  Chia  and  Sue  are  married  and  perpetually  follow  each  other  in  the  sky.  This  section  is  about  their  love  and  culminates  in  the  single  moment  they  can  be  together,  during  an  eclipse.  The  fourth  section  tells  the  story  of  Chibchacum,  God  of  thunder  and  rain.  The  orchestra,  here,  depicts  the  great  storm  that  flooded  the  world,  wiping  away  the  corruption  that  had  spread.  The  final  section  introduces  Bochica  who  is  commonly  seen  as  the  messenger  of  Chiminigagua.  Bochica  arrives  after  the  great  flood  on  a  rainbow  and  strikes  the  ground  with  his  staff  creating  the  Tequendama  falls.  He  teaches  the  Musica  people  about  moral  norms,  ways  to  organize  their  states,  agriculture,  metalworking,  and  crafts.  This  final  section  concludes  the  piece  and  combines  statements  of  all  previous  Gods'  themes.
