- 요약This treatise explores selected compositions by the contemporary Russian composers Mikhail Kollontay and Valery Arzoumanov. Each of the two chapters is based on a lecture recital given at Florida State University. The first chapter examines three of Kollontay's Ballades from Op. 2 bis, specifically No. 3 "Mourning Chant," No. 6 "The Medium," and No. 7 "Guillotine," which were chosen owing to their reference to literary works by Ivan Turgenev. I will explain how Kollontay expresses through music unique emotions in response to narrated events from Turgenev's literary works. The second chapter examines Arzoumanov's Op. 74, "27 Easy Pieces." I will document and explain the musical references embedded in these work that draw upon Arzoumanov's personal experience living in Russia during the Soviet era and his educational journey. Both composers demonstrate a keen awareness of their Russian cultural background, and creatively present observed cultural elements in their music.
