초록/해제
요약This thesis covers my PhD work from 2018-2024 on the connection between holography and the non-local computation problem. It is a fusion of two papers, "gauging the bulk" and "holography as a resource". Holography as a resource, though published later, contains earlier ideas which describe how holography implements a non-local computation protocol. This is the first rigorous demonstration of the connection, and improves upon previous arguments by deriving from holography a simple set of sufficient conditions for toy models of holography that are good resources for non-local computation, and by removing dubious assumptions which have led to ongoing confusion in the field. The second of these papers, gauging the bulk, begins the search for toy models with a particularly elusive feature we call the "dynamical duality", a highly non-trivial relationship between bulk and boundary speeds of light. We show how a limited version of this feature arises when gravity is modeled as an internal gauge symmetry. The resulting toy model also shows that the existence of global bulk symmetries in toy models is not a serious defect, but is expected in realistic models of holography when the bulk is restricted to an appropriate code subspace.Though the search for a resolution of the tension between non-local computation and holography goes on, I hope that these papers will be a useful guide of the problems that remain in order to do so.
