- 요약Due to a constellation of factors, including post-conflict, post-colonial, and post-socialist histories, institutional trust in Serbia is low, and the situation is further exacerbated by an increasingly autocratic political and media environment. This dissertation asks how, in such an environment, citizens decide what they can believe and which sources they can trust. By tracing practices of news consumption among Serbian youth-and the ways they diagnose the social, technological, and political "problem" of media-it sheds light on how people understand actively occurring changes in their political system and imagine alternative futures through discussions of news media. Drawing on media analysis, ethnographic research, and interviews with Serbian media experts, NGO workers, and youth, this dissertation illuminates people's search for truth and ethical standards within a "polluted" media and political environment. The dissertation is structured around three central metaphors that people used to describe media in Serbia: the mirror, the flood, and the mosaic. It argues that examining how people engage with and articulate their relationship to media contributes to our understanding of the public sphere across different sociopolitical and historical contexts.
