초록/해제
요약This dissertation is a text-based analysis of young adult (YA) literature that features protagonists who experience mental illness or are labelled "Mad." The project utilizes Critical Content Analysis (Short) and supplements existing scholarship on the representation of mental illness in YA literature to illuminate issues of power and oppression in relation to mental health and psychiatry. Using a Disability Studies and Mad Studies theoretical framework, I argue that this critical lens makes clear the systemic nature of oppression around mental illness for adolescents. Awareness of the ways ideologies, interpersonal interactions, and institutions cultivate such oppression reveals the flaws of the medical model and its individualized pathologization of mental illness while also disrupting the social model in their ultimate privileging of psychiatry. By considering the ways these oppressions are manifested and the consequences of them on the characters of the novels, I illustrate complexity and nuance around the mental health of young people and argue that these issues are not solely located in individuals but systemically created and sustained. Extending my literary analysis further, I call for further research and novels situated in these frameworks and advocate for inclusion of these texts and critical analyses in schools.
