초록/해제
요약My dissertation explores and compares the political thought of two prominent thinkers from the West and the East-Alexis de Tocqueville and Liang Qichao-to shed fresh light on contemporary discussions concerning the relationship between liberal democracy and its national framework. Engaging with modern discussions on democracy and nationalism, my research examines the enduring tension between the universal principles of liberty and democratic equality, on the one hand, and the particularist demands of national autonomy and self-government, on the other. By drawing on the insights of comparative political theory, my dissertation adopts a novel approach, staging an intellectual conversation between Tocqueville and Liang. Both figures, deeply engaged in the development of liberalism and constitutional democracy in modern France and China, traveled to the United States and provided rich accounts of their observations and reflections. Their works concurred in addressing the interactions and tensions between the development of modern democracy and the task of nation-state building. Through this comparative study, my project contributes to ongoing scholarly efforts to expand the political theory canon in ways that better respond to the global challenges facing liberal democracy today.
