- 요약Consumers use technology for its convenience, often without considering the broader implications of the underlying security. Internet of Things (IoT) devices are physical objects embedded with sensors, software, and connectivity that enable them to collect and exchange data over the Internet without human intervention. Due to their widespread adoption and use in daily life, IoT devices pose significant security threats. Historically, their limited computing resources made integrating more robust security features a challenge. However, even as these technical challenges were resolved, the security risks persisted due to varying investment priorities, lack of government regulation, and insufficient consumer demand. As cybersecurity threats continue to rise, empowering consumers to make more informed security decisions has become increasingly important. Recognizing this, the US government has initiated efforts to better inform consumers about the security quality of IoT devices and software. These efforts provide the context and motivation for this dissertation, which evaluates strategies to bridge the gap between usability, policy, and security adoption. It investigates the interaction between different types of consumers and communication mechanisms to enable consumers to make security-preserving decisions. This dissertation assesses the effectiveness of security labels and Software Bills of Materials (SBOMs) in enhancing the overall security ecosystem. It seeks to provide insights into the complexities of decision-making and the role security can have in it. My research embeds the following contributions: identifying the security features that are most salient in purchasing decisions, elucidating how different characteristics impinge on the importance of factors, illustrating the efficacy of different labels in enabling security, and informing the debate on whether enhanced security features will increase a consumer's willingness to pay. This research serves as a timely contribution to US government agencies as they seek to develop requirements for securing supply chains and protecting consumers.
