- 요약This dissertation explores the relationship between the Gretchen- and the Doctor tragedy by situating Goethe's Faust in the discursive context surrounding the subjects of abortion and infanticide around 1800. It examines the intersection of transformations in discourse on gender, psychology, medicine, philosophy, law, aesthetics and economics to trace the poetological implications and opportunities presented in the drama. The thesis traces an underlying tension in the drama's narrative, between an ontology-oriented mode of mediating experience and the relation between subject and world and a socio-ludic mode of apprehending phenomena. This tension is also present at the level of dramatic form. The formal and narrative expressions of this tension intersect around questions of subjective identity prior to the emergence of an embodied and socially embedded subject. That is to say, these tensions spiral around the concept of the fetal.
