초록/해제
요약"How to Write about Value" offers an analysis of Robert Musil's approach to the philosophical problem of value. It focuses on Musil's der Mann ohne Eigenschaften (The Man without Qualities), an unfinished novel written between 1921 and 1942. Musil's articulation of the problem of value is heavily influenced by Nietzsche: the highest values have lost their vitality, meaning, and authority. But Musil also understands the problem of value in a more formal sense: a disorder within the functioning of connection and disjunction. He seeks to find a more lively, meaningful, or authoritative value by experimenting with the figures of connection and disjunction as they appear in various domains, especially morality and aesthetics. This dissertation reconstructs those experiments. Chapter 2 describes the moral valence of the problem of value: moral judgement is not equal to its task, because our connections to others don't appear as such. Chapter 3 describes the aesthetic valence of the problem of value: art's separation from life is what allows it to be the bearer of value, but this fact destroys value. Chapter 4 reconstructs how Musil applies art's separation from life to the sphere of morality in order to imagine a morality not deformed by its usual divisions. Musil's novel poses notorious challenges to interpretation because of the puzzles it erects around its own coherence, on top of a deep-rooted tonal ambivalence. In the figures of disjunction and connection, this dissertation finds a unit of analysis that lives up to these challenges. Like Hegel, Musil sometimes refers to the paradoxical entanglement of these figures as abstraction, which points as well to the entanglement of disintegration and holism, of distance from life and life, of devaluation and value. For Musil, at least refusing their easy reconciliation is an ethical stance and the beginning of an answer to the question of how to write.
