- 요약Species' evolutionary histories shape their present-day communities. The assembly of communities' ranges from in-situ diversification to prior diversification followed by dispersal. However, far from the simple indices of assembly mechanisms proposed by early models, myriad ecological and historical effects may shape community patterns over broad spatial and temporal scales. In this dissertation, I take an integrative approach to studying the evolutionary history and community assembly of diurnal raptors (orders Accipitriformes, including Cathartidae and Falconiformes) across the world. In Chapter 1, I compare the efficacy of an evolutionarily informed null model (DAMOCLES) to a random draw null model in their ability to detect patterns in community phylogenetic dispersion that suggest certain assembly processes in the context of biogeographic history. I found that the results of these two methods were largely correlated, but that in cases of complex biogeographic history, the DAMOCLES model has the power to detect structure in phylogenetic patterns whereas the random draw null model was overwhelmed. Chapter 2, I infer a fossil-calibrated, species-level phylogeny of Accipitriformes and Falconiformes using supermatrix methods; and I infer the biogeographic histories of Accipitriformes and Falconiformes based on this new phylogeny. My phylogeny is largely concordant with other partial phylogenies from literature and is particularly concordant in the node dates inferred by a recently published phylogeny of Accipitridae. My biogeographic history suggests an African origin for all of Accipitriformes and confirms the South American origin of Falconiformes, as well as illustrating how readily accipitriformes in particular have moved around the globe in the last ~24 million years. In Chapter 3, I use the evolutionarily informed model tested in Chapter 1, the phylogeny and biogeographic histories developed in Chapter 2, a large new trait dataset, and habitat data to quantify phylogenetic and functional dispersion in raptor communities across the world. I synthesize these results to suggest mechanisms driving historical and contemporary raptor community assembly both worldwide and regionally. I found that on a global scale, our results are most consistent with an early diversification and dispersal scenario of assembly, but regional patterns also showcase the complexity in the mode, temporal structure, and geographic trends of assembly in certain areas. Community functional patterns were strongly correlated with habitat structure, indicating a role for contemporary ecological assembly; and community phylogenetic patterns were concordant with biogeographic history, indicating the influence of evolutionary legacy effects as well.
