초록/해제
요약The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted nearly every facet of life, including organized sports. This study examined the lived experiences of female high school athletes participating in competitive or elite level sports. Through the lens of Self-Determination Theory (SDT) in sport management, this research explored the pandemic's impact on these athletes' physical and psychological well-being, training routines, motivation, adaptability, and social connections. This study conducted in-depth interviews with nine (n=9) female athletes in the southeastern United States who played a competitive or elite sport while in high school during the COVID-19 pandemic, defined as the 2019-2020 or 2020-2021 school years. Participants played a variety of sports and came from diverse backgrounds, including White and Hispanic athletes from middle to high income households. Data was collected approximately two years after the pandemic began, potentially introducing recall bias.Through Thematic Analysis, this study revealed five central themes that encapsulated the unique challenges these athletes faced during the pandemic: 1) the significance of their physical and mental health, 2) disruptions in training and competitive events, 3) adjustments to motivation and goal setting strategies, 4) the need for adaptability and resilience, and 5) disturbances in social connections and support systems. This comprehensive understanding, interpreted through the lens of SDT, underscores the importance of holistic well-being, adaptability, intrinsic motivation, and resilience (Deci & Ryan, 2000; Haan, 2021; Harman et al, 2022; Leigh-Hunt et al., 2017).In terms of contributions to sport management literature, this research enriches the field by offering insights into the multifaceted challenges faced by female high school athletes during the pandemic. The principles of SDT emphasize the boundaries between sport and life are permeable, advocating for support systems that address the athlete's overall well-being. This study also calls for future sport management research to encompass diverse populations and experiences during crises, striving to create comprehensive support structures for athletes (Nite & Singer, 2012). It also illustrates how sport managers act as an agent of change in societies and cultures by challenging norms and addressing unique experiences, thus contributing to the growth of knowledge in the field (Nite & Singer, 2012).
