- 요약Trust is essential for human flourishing and yet trust between strangers in the US is declining. This dissertation argues that people are often unaware that their distrust can become self-fulfilling, with individuals and whole groups acting only as trustworthy as they are expected to be. Chapter 1 defines trust, reviews its importance for health and well-being, and argues that people trust too little when they are unaware of trust's self-fulfilling properties. Chapters 2 and 3 (total N = 2715) use experiments to increase trust among participants across surveys, economic games, conversations, and how they perceive their fellow citizens more broadly. Chapter 2 introduces a "trust mindset" that makes participants aware of trust's self-fulfilling properties. Those who gain such awareness trust more in hypothetical scenarios, risk more money, and disclose more vulnerable information to strangers. Chapter 3 extends trust interventions to the group level. It documents that participants vastly overestimate how many Reddit users post untrustworthy comments. Correcting this novel misperception reduces pluralistic ignorance, as participants become less likely to believe the average fellow citizen desires more untrustworthy content than they themselves do. Together, these findings provide new ways to rebuild trust between strangers.
