초록/해제
요약This dissertation aims to identify multiple considerations in establishing accurate, expressive intonation on the double bass and strategies that may allow a double bassist to prepare a more intonationally informed and accurate performance based on the measurement of cents. The dissertation consists of nine chapters, each section to organize the process of implementing informed decisions in intonation based on existing research for intonation of the double bass, stringed instruments, and general intonation in music. Existing research has explored expressive intonation on the double bass and other instruments considering the following categories: (1) the choice of the three main tuning systems of equal temperament, just intonation, and Pythagorean tuning; (2) the use of overtones, sympathetic vibrations, and open strings on the double bass; (3) the involvement of tonal context and beating; (4) the use of melodic tuning, register and timbre's perceived effects on intonation; (5) vibrato's effect on intonation; as well as additional considerations. Direct application of intonation considerations will be made in the first movement of the Concerto for Double Bass and Orchestra (1905) by Serge Koussevitzky, one of the most important bass concertos in the repertoire and widely performed. Existing research is discussed and applied per chapter to selected sections of the first movement of the concerto. In this section, a cent difference is assigned to parts of the concerto to demonstrate different choices in performance regarding each intonation consideration.
