- 요약In the years following Glee's (2009-2015) premiere, five additional television musical series aired: Smash (2012-2013), Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (2015-2019), Galavant (2015-2016), Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist (2020-2021), and Schmigadoon! (2021-present). Each of these shows is a television series in which every episode contains musical numbers that are integrated into the show's plot and premise. These musical numbers are either covers/arrangements of preexisting songs or are original compositions that often reference popular and musical theater song genres. In this dissertation, I argue that the television musical series should be treated as a distinct genre even as it draws from previous conventions of musical theater and that these series express (and establish) the conventions of this new genre in distinctive ways. I draw from genre studies, from the more general to theories developed from film, television, and musical theater studies. I also consider ideas of parody and pastiche, not only because they can suggest the existence of a genre, but also because several of the shows that I discuss prominently feature parodistic and pastiche-filled songs. Finally, I situate my definition and analysis of the television musical series among the several that have been discussed within the last two decades. The television musical, and specifically the television musical series, is an evolving genre that is looking to the future, not only the past. Although it draws from, emulates, and parodies many aspects of Broadway and musical theater history, it also intersects with twenty-firstcentury American themes of identity, mental health, community, and exploration/acceptance of emotions from grief to elation. Glee, Smash, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist, Galavant, and Schmigadoon! may all occupy the genre of the television musical series, but each series is distinct, with a wide variety of emotional themes, flavors of preexisting and original numbers, and plot devices behind how characters break into song.
