- 요약Maurice Durufle's (1902-1986) renowned choral and organ compositions incorporate a lush diatonic sound palette that combines Impressionistic use of seventh and ninth chords, diatonic modality according to contemporary plainchant accompaniment practices, and principles of traditional tonal syntax. To determine the harmonic structure and function resulting from this stylistic synthesis, this dissertation proposes an analytical system that reconciles aspects of traditional function theories with the multivalent pitch relationships present in the diatonic modes. The resulting classification scheme captures the multiple functional and centric relationships between extended tertian harmonies in Durufle's modal music. To develop this system, I generalize the theory of the double-tonic complex (DTC) to any pair of third-related modes that share a diatonic collection. Combining the triads of a DTC's constituent modes into a series of seventh chords enables functional assignments for every seventh chord in the DTC, with such functions relating to both modal centers. I use this system to explore the gradual functional evolution in the Aeolian-Ionian complex of "Ubi caritas" (op. 10) as well as the harmonic complementarity of Aeolian and Ionian modes in the "Introit" to the Requiem (op. 9). The added contextualization of an antitonic function helps clarify function in DTCs that include Dorian, Phrygian, and Lydian modes, as shown in analyses of the Prelude sur le nom d'Alain (op. 7), "Libera me" (op. 9), and "Pie Jesu" (op. 9).Then, defining diatonic and chromatic pivot chords between closely related modes and modal DTCs on the circle of fifths provides a means for describing how Durufle shifts between collections, as observed in the Messe "cum jubilo" (op. 11). A complete analysis of the "Kyrie" (op. 9) synthesizes the dissertation's concepts, arguing that the movement's expressive trajectory and modal harmonic structure are closely intertwined. Successive climaxes suggestive of the personal, supplicative nature of the "Kyrie" litany are understood as aligning with salient harmonic functions that arise within the movement's DTCs.
