■520    ▼aThis  treatise  comprises  two  parts,  examining  Robert  Schumann's  Carnaval,  Op.  9,  and  the  piano  composition  techniques  of  contemporary  Chinese  composer  Zhang  Zhao.  The  first  part  compares  the  French  and  German  first  editions  of  Carnaval,  highlighting  how  Schumann's  literary  interests  and  hidden  pitch  structures  shaped  the  work's  form,  narrative,  and  symbolism.  It  considers  his  references  to  Jean  Paul's  digressive  storytelling,  the  dual  personas  Florestan  and  Eusebius,  and  the  "Sphinx"  ciphers,  revealing  Schumann's  multilayered  approach  to  fusing  literary,  philosophical,  and  musical  elements.The  second  section  shifts  focus  to  Zhang  Zhao,  a  leading  figure  in  modern  Chinese  composition  whose  piano  works  deftly  combine  Western  harmonic  principles  with  distinctively  Chinese  elements.  Through  close  readings  of  Pi  Huang,  Numa  Ame,  and  Yin  Shi,  this  analysis  highlights  his  structural  innovations,  use  of  folk  themes,  and  expression  of  emotional  depth.  By  employing  inventive  variation  forms,  dynamic  rhythmic  shifts,  and  pentatonic  writing,  Zhang  Zhao  effectively  blends  tradition  with  modern  creativity.  His  vision  also  addresses  universal  human  themes-memory,  resilience,  and  spiritual  renewal-often  conveyed  through  poetic  imagery  and  folk-inspired  transformations.Taken  together,  these  analyses  illustrate  how  both  Schumann  and  Zhang  Zhao  extend  the  expressive  possibilities  of  the  piano  repertoire,  revealing  its  continued  capacity  to  adapt  and  evolve  across  diverse  cultural  and  historical  contexts.As  per  Florida  State  University's  requirements,  this  document  is  based  on  two  public  lecture  recitals,  presented  on  March  30,  2024,  and  October  25,  2024.
