- 요약This project outlines gaps in the existing scholarship on first-generation college students (FGCS) and offers a new framework that centers on the students' articulation of their first-hand experiences. By employing folklore methodologies concerning ethnographic interviews and narrative analysis, I examine the ways American stories about class mobility, particularly the stories from Horatio Alger's collections, permeate not only popular culture but also influence sociological research and the creation of programs designed to serve the FGCS population.Sociological studies expect and consequently reproduce existing narrative tropes such as rugged individualism, the American Dream, upward mobility, and meritocracy when studying FGCS. To demonstrate how these misconceptions affect FGCS I use Barthes' semiotic concept of mythologies to examine how FGCS are cast into the role of hero and held up as evidence of a meritocracy within academia. This role, and the assumed narrative that accompanies it, creates an expectation of performance that the FGCS must learn to navigate both internally and externally. Informed by ethnographic interviews with FGCS who have graduated, I make an argument that current scholarship relies too heavily on the notions of imposter syndrome to explain reported feelings alienation and isolation among FGCS. From this perspective, and informed by the interviews with the graduate FGCS, I propose an alternative framework to imposter syndrome that utilizes Du Bois' double consciousness to understand how FGCS navigate the disconnect between their experiences, their sense of self, and the assumptions that are made about them both by popular culture and the academy itself.
