요약Sleep disturbance is common, impairing, and may affect symptomatology in neurodevelopmental psychiatric disorders (NPDs). Here, we take a genetics-first approach to study the complex role of sleep in psychopathology and neurodevelopment. Specifically, we examine severity of sleep disturbance, sleep physiology, and sleep-related behaviors in individuals with a deletion in the 22q11.2 locus (22qDel). A 22qDel confers some of the greatest known risks of neuropsychiatric disorders, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Schizophrenia. Despite the close relationship between sleep disturbances and NPDs, the literature on sleep in 22qDel carriers is scarce. This thesis aims to address gaps in the literature through conducting a series of studies that take a deep dive into different aspects of sleep in 22qDel carriers. We employ scalable methods of obtaining high-quality measures of sleep neurophysiology, including a newly developed sleep EEG headband, to adapt to the 22qDel population and cultivate a sample more representative of the 22qDel population. Our innovative studies utilizing new technology in a rare disorder, provide pilot data that serves as a starting point for investigating the mechanisms underlying the relationship between sleep and neurodevelopment in 22qDel carriers.
