- 요약Aggregation of hosts is a ubiquitous feature within infectious disease systems: humans aggregate in households, schools, and workplaces, while wildlife and livestock animals aggregate into flocks, live market populations, as well as their own social clusters. Because aggregation is a fundamental part of the ecology of many hosts, it will affect the long-term transmission and evolution of pathogens within infectious disease systems. Additionally, it will affect the interventions we put in place to mitigate infection burden. In this dissertation, I address the effects of aggregation on the transmission and evolution of infectious diseases, as well as on intervention strategies. To address transmission, in the first chapter I model the effects of aggregation of poultry in village populations on Herd Immunity Thresholds of Newcastle disease virus, and in the second chapter the effects of the aggregation of evicted individuals into "doubled-up" households on transmission of COVID-19 in heterogeneous urban landscapes. To address evolution I ask how the aggregation of poultry across regions into live-animal markets will affect the long-term virulence evolution of avian pathogens, such as H5N1 avian influenza. Finally, to address interventions, I first develop causal inference methodology for field trials in order to assess the dependence of the protective effects of transmissible vaccines on aggregation, and second, investigate how to adequately power cluster randomized-control trials to estimate the effects of non-pharmaceutical interventions for places where humans normally aggregate, such as schools and workplaces. Identifying the role of aggregation allows us to better understand the host ecology of infectious disease systems, as well as design rational intervention strategies and policies to mitigate disease.
