초록/해제
요약This dissertation investigates how works by the poets William Carlos Williams, Charles Olson, Robert Duncan, and Nathaniel Mackey were inspired by and are examples of process thought, a methodological tendency that has been influential in several academic disciplines, namely philosophy, theology, and ecology, unified by the recognition that the inherent dynamism of all things is ontologically prior to what Western philosophy has tended to think of as the things themselves. This investigation allows me to develop a conception of the relationship between poetry and philosophy that I call the process-emergence schema, in which the activity (or process) of thinking poetry and philosophy together is itself ontologically prior to either poetry or philosophy as discrete disciplines-in other words, that the relationship does not follow from the existence of these two enterprises, but is their requisite condition. I deploy this schema toward reappraising the philosophical sophistication of the poets I study and developing philosophically informed interpretations of their works, as well as toward commenting upon aspects of our critical practice in general, namely, how to interpret open-ended poetry without either reducing it to a monolithic and static meaning or figuring it as metaphysically Other. It also includes an introduction, in which I discuss the relationship between poetry and philosophy by way of differentiating my own view from that of French philosopher Alain Badiou and establish the role of process metaphysics in the history of American poetry. Finally, I conclude the project with a coda addressing Rachel Blau DuPlessis' feminist poetics of process.
