초록/해제
요약I propose a sociological view of competitive positioning in markets and, more specifically, that audiences evaluate producers based on not only their strategic choices ("how one produces") but also their ascribed identities ("who produces"). I propose the Conditional-Compensatory (C-C) Framework, which offers three specific claims. First, audience evaluations of producers are directly shaped by producer identity. Second, while producer choices featured in prior work compensate for disfavored identities, returns of choices are conditional on producer identity. Third, producers selectively make choices due to their identities, leading to the stratification of producers in markets by identities. The C-C Framework is tested across four different empirical studies. Chapter 1 introduces this dissertation's central research question on producers' identities and social evaluation in markets, and Chapter 2 develops my core theoretical framework. Chapters 3 and 4 investigate how identity conditions the returns of a specific differentiation strategy, authentic production. In contrast to prior literature, I discuss how market positioning as an authentic producer is constrained by audience evaluation of producers' ascribed identities. Chapter 5 examines how identity constrains a broker's ability to facilitate exchange in markets, that is, seize opportunities for idea exchange across two cultural markets. Chapter 6 synthesizes these findings and outlines a research agenda that explores broader patterns of market stratification and specific mechanisms. This dissertation contributes to our understanding of how producer identity ("who") fundamentally conditions the returns to strategic choices ("how") in market positioning, revealing how identity-based evaluations may function as a form of legitimated discrimination that leads to producer stratification within markets.
