- 요약This dissertation contains three chapters using structural estimation to understand the functioning of markets. In Chapter 1 "The Dynamic Welfare Consequences of Trade Restrictions" I study the recurrent phenomenon of food exporting countries restricting exports in response to rising international food prices. These countries aim to redistribute income from exporters to consumers. I examine this pattern in the context of beef export restrictions in Argentina. I inform a standard land-use model -- extended to include the dynamic problem of cattle raising -- using a panel of cattle stocks and agricultural output, at the county-year level. Quantitative analysis shows the policy to be blunt: deadweight loss is large, and most of the redistributed income comes from producers of domestic varieties rather than export varieties. On the dynamic side, effects are strongest in the short run, but as producers of export varieties adjust to the policy, consumer gains dwindle and the burden of the policy is shifted to producers of domestic varieties. In Chapter 2 "Rationally Inattentive Exporters" I apply rational inattention theory to understand how information frictions affect our interpretation of firm behavior through the lens of conventional models. The analysis delivers three main results: information costs affect medium-sized firms the most; the effect on trade volume is indeterminate; and information frictions cause inefficient selection into exporting. I take the model to the data using the Colombian Manufacturing Survey of 2017. Being fully informed costs the firm as much as the fixed cost of exporting. In Chapter 3 "The Economic Costs of Regulatory Nationalism: the Case of the Argentine Commercial Airline Industry" I study the anti-competitive effect of pervasive entry restrictions in airline markets based on firms' country of domicile. I examine this question through an episode of deregulation in Argentina. For the analysis, I use a private data source on prices and quantities of each firm per route, observing one year before the reform, and three years after. Using a difference-in-differences analysis, I find that for each firm that entered a market, prices fell by 13%. A back-of-the-envelope calculation reveals that this corresponds to over 200 million dollars of consumer surplus per year, which in turn corresponds to over 10% of total market revenue.
