- 요약While there is much evidence of the impact of speech therapy on voices damaged by illness or injury, there is no research aiming to retrain the damaged voice using sung vocal exercises, or vocalises. Speech therapy is a useful tool in recuperating and retraining the speaking voice, but a more comprehensive approach is necessary for the damaged singing voice, when singing is done at a different level and in a different manner than speech.In this study, ten singers sang a series of vocal exercises, or vocalises, designed to improve vocal fold closure and subglottal pressure, while acoustic data was recorded by an electroglottograph (EGG) and a microphone. Two recordings per subject were made, approximately one month apart. The recorded data was analyzed using VoceVista Video Pro, which is a program that turns acoustic data into visual data using the power spectrum, long-time average spectrum (LTAS), and the vocal fold contact quotient (CQ). These two graphs were used to assess the amount of contact between the vocal folds when phonating, as well as vibratory patterns, the presence and strength of overtones, and the primary harmonic, which informs registration.At the start of the study, subjects had decreased vocal fold closure rates and acoustic input due to illness or injury. The purpose of this study was to determine whether sung vocal exercises can aid in the recuperation of a damaged voice and retrain the voice by increasing glottal closure during phonation, so that voice use does not lead to further damage. This research sought to understand more fully the impact that increased glottal contact has on the health of the voice by observing the glottal CQ, the usable vocal range, and acoustical changes in the voice before, during, and after the use of singing exercises designed to improve vocal efficiency.This study found that the CQ could be increased using vocal exercises to retrain the voice and, as a result, vocal damage was improved. This was observed in improvements in tone focus, vibratory patterns, the presence and strength of overtones, and the usable range of the voice. More research is needed to determine whether vocal improvement continues with long-term, repeated use of the study's vocalises.
