- 요약This treatise examines selected compositions by five Hong Kong composers: Doming Lam, Austin Yip, Kai-Young Chan, Joyce Tang, and Ka Shu (Kenneth) Tam. It is derived from two lecture recitals presented at Florida State University. Chapter One focuses on piano works by Doming Lam, specifically Seven Popular Chinese Folk Songs, Op. 11, No. 1, the Prelude from Prelude and Scherzo, Op. 4, and Gu-chu Piano Suite, Op. 12. It explores Lam's distinctive approach to transcribing traditional Chinese music for piano, integrating twentieth-century Western idioms, such as clusters and asymmetrical meter, with traditional Chinese musical elements, including jiahua, changhe, heterophonic texture, and techniques derived from Chinese musical instruments and regional operas. Chapters Two through Five analyze individual works by Yip ("Tube"), Chan ("Moon over Pyrus Blossom"), Tang ("Old Posters, near Yung Shue Wan, Lamma Island"), and Tam ("Reaction III"). These chapters investigate how each composer incorporates aspects of Hong Kong culture, including Cantonese musical elements and the suppression of the language, inefficiencies in daily life, changes in societal structures and urban scenery, as well as social issues arising from COVID-19 and the rise of political movements, into their music using contemporary compositional techniques. This treatise highlights the dynamic interplay between cultural identity and modern compositional practice, offering new perspectives on Hong Kong's contemporary piano repertoire.
