- 요약This dissertation examines the lives of Central American and Mexican immigrant garment workers in Los Angeles, focusing on how racial capitalism, settler colonialism, and gendered labor exploitation shape their experiences across generations. Drawing on 30 in-depth oral histories, participant observation, and autoethnographic reflection, I develop the framework of "Economies of Sacrifice" to analyze how undocumented laborers-especially women-exchange their bodies, health, and time in pursuit of survival, dignity, and familial possibility within an industry that renders them both essential and disposable. Set against the backdrop of U.S. imperialism, migration, and the global expansion of fast fashion, this study explores how transnational histories of displacement are embedded in the seams of the Los Angeles garment industry. I trace how workers navigate economic precarity, legal exclusion, and intergenerational caregiving, while illuminating the everyday forms of resistance and solidarity they enact. Through an interdisciplinary lens, I examine the feminization of garment work, the physical and emotional toll of labor, and the ways in which systemic neglect is internalized by workers as personal sacrifice.
