초록/해제
요약The unifying theme of this thesis is the study of small-scale processes at the ice-water boundary of marine-terminating glaciers. The release of air bubbles from the melting ice into the water in particular is often, but not always, a common thread. Small-scale processes at this boundary have the potential to influence larger-scale behavior of the ice sheets, and, in the case of the release of bubbles, to also provide a useful tool with which to study other processes occurring at the boundary. Chapter 1 presents a technique for making in situ measurements at the ice-water boundary of small pieces of floating ice that has recently calved from a marine-terminating glacier. Chapter 2 presents theoretical and numerical modeling efforts to constrain the maximum energy that can be radiated as sound by the bubbles released as glacier ice melts. Comparison with experimental data shows that this model does indeed provide an upper bound and explain some of the variability in the radiated sound of ice, which represents a step towards using passive acoustics as a tool to measure submarine melting. Chapter 3 presents measurements of the modification of the size distribution of bubbles that occurs during their release from the ice into the water. The results show that this modification can vary, with bubbles sometimes remaining largely intact upon their release into the water, while in other cases many of the bubbles in the ice are broken up into many smaller bubbles in the water. These results have implications for the influence of these bubbles in the water on submarine melting.
