- 요약Romantic relationships are important to life quality, as they have a range of effects on areas of life from resource sharing to child rearing. One of the primary motivators to obtain and maintain relationships is sexual desire. However, this term has been plagued by inconsistent operationalizations, and is overdue for a clarification. Chapter 2 of this dissertation creates and validates a new measure of sexual desire that captures two subfactors, pluritraction and sexual appetite. Pluritraction is so termed because it captures the plurality of potential targets of sexual attraction; by analogy, it is similar to walking past a bakery window and finding the baked goods in the window to be appetizing on a spectrum from all or many to few or none. Sexual appetite is so termed because it captures the intrinsic motivation to pursue sexual activity; by analogy, it is similar to walking past a bakery window while on a spectrum from starving to not at all hungry. Chapter 2 found that, while pluritraction and sexual appetite are positively correlated, scores on pluritraction are lower for women than men after controlling for level of sexual appetite. Chapter 3 of this dissertation examines this two-factor model of desire across eleven nations, and replicates the findings from Chapter 2. Additionally, this chapter shows that, after adjusting for sex-based bias in responding to sexuality questions, there is little or no sex difference in sexual appetite, yet a moderate sex difference in pluritraction. This indicates that much of the sex differences in sexual desire may be driven primarily by differences in the number of individuals found sexually attractive. Chapter 4 of this dissertation investigates fluctuations in pluritraction and sexual appetite across the menstrual cycle. It found that sexual appetite, but not pluritraction, fluctuates across the menstrual cycle. This indicates that, at least for women, sexual appetite may be more state-like, while pluritraction may be more trait-like. Together, these findings indicate that in order to better capture sexual desire in a way that represents women as well as men, a two-factor measure including appetite and pluritraction factors is necessary.
