요약University research environments are hubs of innovation, yet they expose academic researchers to a wide range of complex health and safety risks. Whether working in wet-labs, dry-labs, clinical settings, or field-based locations, researchers frequently encounter hazards, including not only traditional dangers such as chemical, biological, and physical exposures, but also psychosocial stressors and other safety-related challenges. These conditions can greatly affect physical and mental well-being. Despite their vital role in scientific progress, the occupational health of academic researchers remains largely overlooked. This study aimed to address this gap through three key specific aims. Aim 1: Develop and administer a survey to measure health and safety, including perceived stress levels, among professional (i.e., postdoctoral fellows, staff, and faculty) and student researchers. The study included 1,202 participants from the University of Michigan (UM), most of whom identified as White (54.9%), female (68.8%), and held staff (versus students, postdoc, or faculty) roles (39.6%). The majority worked in wet-lab environments, with a median age of 30 years. Participants typically had five or fewer years of experience at UM and worked around 40 hours per week. Professional researchers reported lower stress than students. Incident rates, including injuries, property damage, and near-misses, were higher among wet-lab researchers and those with poor eating habits, while holding a PhD and having positive perceptions of job and coworker safety were linked with lower incident risk. These findings highlight the need for targeted safety interventions for wet-lab researchers and those with unhealthy habits, along with efforts to support stressed student researchers. Strengthening training and wellness programs may help reduce work-related incidents in academic research settings. Aim 2: Assess and prioritize the risks associated with health and safety for professional researchers and students. Ergonomic and psychosocial hazards were the most common hazards, highlighting the need for targeted interventions like ergonomic workstation improvements and workload management strategies. Risk levels varied by researcher role and setting: professional researchers faced higher ergonomic risks, student researchers encountered more electrical hazards, field researchers experienced greater weather-related and physical hazards, and dry-lab researchers were prone to ergonomic issues. Chemical and biological hazards remained of concern despite lower frequency of exposure. The findings emphasize the importance of considering role when prioritizing risks, setting-specific safety measures, ongoing risk assessments, and strengthened safety culture in academic research environments. Aim 3: Compare health and safety perceptions between professional researchers and students. The results revealed that professional researchers reported slightly higher job and coworker safety scores, while students rated management safety practices more favorably. Safety perceptions were influenced by factors such as research setting, stress levels, working hours, and prior incidents. Positive perceptions were linked to strong coworker support and awareness of safety guidelines, while negative perceptions were tied to stress, inconsistent compliance with safety guidelines, and prior incidents. These findings highlight the need for tailored interventions, improved supervisor engagement, and clearer safety communication to strengthen safety culture in academic research settings. This dissertation provides a comprehensive assessment of health and safety among academic researchers, highlighting their exposure to diverse hazards, stress, and varying safety perceptions. The findings provide insights that can inform institutional policies, guide the development of targeted safety interventions, wellness initiatives, and training programs, foster a stronger safety culture, reduce incident rates, and better support the well-being of both professional and student researchers.
