- 요약Misinformation is a widespread and dangerous issue, especially given individuals' tendencies to assume an assertion is true. Although considerable attention has been devoted to the topic, more work is needed to understand how to successfully combat it. For the current research, we created a novel intervention to discourage individuals' tendencies to assume that an assertion is true. In each of four studies (Ns ranging from 316 to 366), participants completed a task in which they indicated whether a set of items was true or false. Many of the items were urban myths that participants were likely to incorrectly deem true. Participants in the intervention condition were given immediate, objective feedback about their responses to each item, while the control condition received no feedback. All participants then assessed the truth value of a second, unrelated set of items on which they received no feedback. In the first three experiments, this second set of items was general trivia, with each study utilizing a different set of response options (i.e., dichotomous true/false, true/false/skip, & 6-point scale from "Definitely true" to "Definitely false"). In the fourth experiment, this test phase consisted of conspiracy beliefs and political facts. In all four experiments, signal detection analyses revealed no difference between the conditions with respect to overall accuracy (i.e., d-prime). However, the bias parameter (i.e., c) was affected; intervention participants were less likely than control participants to assume test items were true (p ≤ .001 in each experiment). These findings indicate that when participants were unsure of the answer, those in the intervention were less likely than control participants to guess "True" for both general trivia and conspiracy beliefs. As such, this novel feedback intervention offers a promising means of decreasing the endorsement of misinformation and conspiracy beliefs.
